About Kopesha
A Tanzanian website and app that helps a borrower find a licensed lender, and helps a lender run its loan book.
What Kopesha does
Kopesha has three parts. The first is a lender directory: every microfinance institution on the Bank of Tanzania's Tier 2 register, with its region, district, licence number and how to reach it. The second is a set of borrower guides — articles on what a loan really costs, the questions to ask before you sign, collateral, your rights, and how the frauds work. The third is a loan-management system used by the lenders themselves: loans, repayments, installment schedules, SMS receipts and reports.
What Kopesha does not do
Kopesha lends no money, decides no loan, and vouches for no lender's terms. A loan agreement is between you and the institution. Using Kopesha is free for a borrower: searching is free, asking a lender to call you is free, and no loan fee is ever paid through Kopesha. A licensed lender will never ask you to pay a fee before you receive the loan.
Where the directory comes from
The institutions listed come from the Bank of Tanzania's public register of Tier 2 microfinance service providers, each with its licence number (MSP2-…). An institution can claim its page and add its own details; one that is not on the register can sign up, and its page is marked as such. The register is refreshed whenever a new edition is published.
How the guides are written
There are 18 guides, written in Swahili and English for a Tanzanian borrower. They are general information about borrowing — not advice about any particular lender or your own finances — and no lender pays for them. If you spot a mistake, write to us.
How the service is paid for
Lenders that use the loan-management system pay a monthly subscription. The public pages — the directory and the guides — may show Google advertising, which is what keeps them free for a borrower. No advertiser is given your name, your number or anything from a loan request; the privacy policy sets this out in full.
